Last week, I shared that I will be participating in the Spring 2022 One Room Challenge®, to transform our guest bathroom into a European cottage modern oasis. The One Room Challenge® is a popular bi-annual interior design event that brings together hundreds of designers, diyers, and creatives to create truly inspiring and beautiful spaces.
The idea of this event came about when a woman named Linda and a group of friends decided to work alongside each other to tackle one finished room, and realized that finishing an entire room from start to finish was a big challenge. This is so relatable, as I often have one hundred “tabs” open in my brain, flooded with ideas but struggle on where to start and how to prioritize. Does anyone else feel this way?
I love the team-like feel of the One Room Challenge® community – everyone is working on the same schedule, keeping each other accountable and cheering each other on. It’s also a great opportunity to connect with others in the industry. According to ORC, “the ORC is not a competition, but rather a celebration of creativity, inspiration, and original ideas.” I love this! Community > Competition all day 🙂
Each week for 8 weeks, participants share their progress on the One Room Challenge® website, where guests can see a curated feed of all the spaces being transformed. If you love design, I encourage you to follow along to see all the participants. It’s truly inspiring!
European cottage modern guest bath
The space that I will be transforming over the next 8 weeks is our guest half bathroom. This is the only room in our home that has remained untouched since we moved in 4 years ago, so I’m very excited to make this room feel more like us. See “before”:

The Plan:
My design for this room is a blend of European cottage and modern. All of the design decisions I made for the space were based on the fact that this room has to function as both our guest bath and my daughter’s bath. I want it to represent my signature style (old + new + lots of character), but also incorporate some feminine and floral elements throughout for my daughter. I’ve been dying to use matte terracotta clay tile in a design, so I’m most excited about this feature…hello warm and earthy vibes 🙂

How we will bring the design to life:
- New Tub with Glass Shower Door
- New Floor and Shower Tile
- New Arched Shower Niche
- New Shower / Bath Faucets
- New Sink and Faucet
- New Light Fixture
- New Mirror / Medicine Cabinet
- New Toilet
- New Trim (Doors & Windows)
- Fresh Paint
- Wallpaper
- Arch Shelf
We’re on week 2 of the challenge and demo is almost complete. Yay! There’s something so fulfilling about looking at the dust in a blank space post-demo, and envisioning your design coming to life. I can’t wait to take on this challenge alongside others, cheering each other on and celebrating at each stage of our transformations. I’ll be providing updates here on the blog and on Instagram each week. Thanks for following along!
